ルーレットで「0」が出た場合、0に直接賭けた人の配当倍率は「36倍」になります。たとえば、1枚のチップを0に賭けて0が出たら、その1枚が36枚に増えて払い戻されます。これは他の数字（1〜36）に単独で賭けたときの倍率と同じで、「35倍の配当プラス元の1枚」という形で戻ってくるイメージです。
0が出たとき、赤・黒や偶数・奇数、3つの数字をまとめて賭けるダズンやコラムなど、他の賭け方をしていた人はすべて負けになります。たとえば、赤に賭けていても、出目が0なら赤でも黒でもなく、外れと扱われます。この仕組みによって、カジノ側に約2.7％程度のハウスアドバンテージが生まれます。
0を狙ってプレイする場合、出現確率はヨーロピアンルーレット（0が1つだけ）で約2.7％、アメリカンルーレット（0と00）では約2.6％ほどです。単純な計算で言えば、100回回したうち0が当たるのは平均して2〜3回程度です。つまり、1回36倍の配当が得られても、長期的には賭け続けていると全体として損失が広がりやすい形になっているため、楽しむための「一発狙い」に近いベットとして考えた方が無理のない遊び方に近くなります。
